Design & Engineering students develop a modular bicycle trailer

When transferring a product idea into a feasible product, a wide variety of technical aspects must be taken into account. No one knows this better than Martin Schütz, engineer and lecturer at both ETH Zurich (Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering) and Zurich University of the Arts (Industrial Design). In his class about Design and Engineering, he gave his students an in-depth insight into the problems of the technical implementation of an idea up to a functioning product.

The task that the students gave themselves was to design a modular bicycle trailer. They wanted to develop an innovative idea and turn it into a functional prototype. The concept from the team around Felix Brunold, Dominic Büttiker, Yu Ting Chung and Thibaut Wenger was to develop a bicycle trailer that can be adapted and used for various applications and types of luggage and loads.

When the moment arrived to turn the students’ product idea into reality, Radiate Engineering & Design came into play. During one day, the students showed up in the Radiate Prototyping Lab in order to finalize and produce a functional prototype, using flax materials and vacuum lamination methods.

The collaboration with MTB Cylcletech & Revolt Zycling continues

The Revolt Zycling AG was founded in 2020 and follows the goal to delight customers with high quality bikes. Their most well-known brand, MTB Cycletech, has been going its own way as an independent bicycle brand since 1984. Perfection, quality and timeless design are the guardrails, innovation and pioneering achievements the result of persistent work. This year, some very new models of the MTB Cylcetech brand will be launched. Radiate Engineering & Design is looking forward to support Revolt Zycling in the development and realization of the new models.

 

Partner network study program Computational and Data Science

The use of data for mobility, health, trip planning or weather forecasts is ubiquitous. Data-based models are also becoming increasingly important in product development. At Radiate Engineering & Design, simulation-driven engineering has been part of our core competence from the very beginning.

We are therefore pleased to share our knowledge in a cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons in the new study programme “Computational and Data Science” and to support the education of future knowledge workers. The areas of cooperation cover various fields, including the support of technical experts on the part of Radiate or the possibility to accompany bachelor theses.

Radiate client Perspective Robotics wins the iF Gold Award 2021 for its public safety drone, the Fotokite Sigma! The Fotokite Sigma is an actively tethered unmanned aerial system providing Public Safety teams with mission-critical situational awareness from previously unavailable elevated perspectives. Unlimited continuous flight time and launching, flying, and landing with the single push of a button help to save team resources.

Radiate developed a cost-efficient manufacturing process to produce lightweight airframes for the Fototkite Sigma made of carbon composite.

Radiate expands prototyping capabilities with brand new CNC milling machine

Since the birth of Radiate, prototyping is in our DNA, incorporated in a simulation driven engineering approach. Due to the limited size of the current CNC workhorse, Radiate recently acquired a new, larger CNC milling machine, which enables us to prototype and manufacture larger parts such as tooling molds, aluminium or steel parts up to sizes of 2m x 1m. With its gantry build, the machine from the german Company BZT is incredibly accurate for its size and can handle high acceleration and speed in order to increase efficiency. We are excited to be able to offer further manufacturing capacities for our customers!

Project Circleg wins Cybathlon

Only recently, the Project Circleg team presented its new prototype, the Circleg Zero. Now the team has won the Cybathlon 2020 competition in their category. Andre Frei overcame the obstacle course as the fastest with the advanced Circleg Zero prosthesis.

The Cybathlon is an international competition for assistance systems. Teams from all over the world measure their prototypes in six different disciplines. Last weeks, over 50 teams competed against each other. Project Circleg started with the two pilots Andre Frei and Beat Schwarzenbach to test the Circleg Zero prosthesis, which is still a prototype. The victory in the Cybathlon has now shown that the new prototype works perfectly. Radiate is happy about the success and congratulates our customer!

Mario Tischhauser joins the Radiate Team

As a new addition to the Radiate team, we welcome Mario Tischhauser as our new Head of Prototyping Lab. A trained wood sculptor and forest warden, Mario has excellent skills and knowledge of various materials, craft techniques and in the use of machines. Through his former work in the 3D printing industry he has not only experience in prototyping, but also the ability to innovate and good organisational skills. Flexibility, independence and perseverance are also part of his qualities – this fits very well with Radiate. We are very happy to have Mario with us and wish him a good start in his new environment.

In a recent interview, Timothy Habermacher explained the cooperation with our friends from Project Circleg, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach between designers and engineers.
