Bicycle Product Development Assessment

We found out that by learning more about the needs of people and businesses behind our development projects we can deliver better solutions in order to meet our client’s goals. That’s why we just launched the “Bicycle Product Development Assessment“, a little questionnaire in order to assess the hidden potential, risks & opportunities for a bicycle development project.
So if you plan to develop a bicycle in the near future, here’s your chance to learn how you can optimize the product development process. Just follow the link, answer our questions and receive an assessment of the hidden potential, risks & opportunities for your next project.
We’re also happy to receive your feedback on this idea – just drop us a line by using our contact form 🙂
Greetings from the Radiate Bike Division Team.

We are looking forward to the joint project with ORTLIEB.

Holistic Bicycle Development – Launch of the Radiate “Bike Division”

Radiate Engineering & Design AG establishes the “Bike Division“, a service unit specialized in holistic product development of bicycles and components. The service unit, which is specifically geared to the needs of the bicycle industry, brings together all the necessary expertise, resources and services so that both complete bicycles “from scratch” and individual components can be developed, optimized, tested and prepared for industrialization. Experience from aerospace and F1 racing is incorporated into the offering and enables modern and efficient engineering and design.

The bicycle industry is a fast-growing and demanding environment with constant new requirements for product innovation. Manufacturers and brands need to bring first-class products to the market in order to grow and differentiate – but there is little time for R&D and product development, and above all, this is often not considered holistically. The solution is “Holistic Bicycle Development” – the idea behind this is to use simulation-driven development methods to take a holistic view of all challenges from the start, including function, design, materials, manufacturing processes and costs. By researching new materials and processes and applying modern technologies such as AI/ML engineering, Radiate is professionalizing bike engineering and thus exploiting all opportunities to efficiently develop innovative products.

The “Bike Division” team consists of experienced specialists and emerging talents with backgrounds in various disciplines: Experts in composite lightweight construction from aerospace, fluid engineers from F1 racing, and renowned industrial designers for two-wheel design. The interdisciplinary team makes it possible to develop complete bikes or components of a wide spectrum: from an aerodynamic wheelset to a complex S-pedelec to a lightweight composite handlebar.

The new service unit is led by Jonas Schmid, who has been involved with Radiate Engineering & Design as a partner since 2015. A Master of Science ETH in Mechanical Engineering, he brings years of expertise in product design and structural simulation. “We bring to this unit a high level of know-how, technology and experience from a variety of projects in different fields. Together with our customers, we share a passion for bikes and have helped design and develop some of the most innovative bike components in the world,” said Jonas Schmid, who will take on the role of Director for the “Bike Division”. Timothy Habermacher, CEO of Radiate Engineering & Design adds: “By combining our activities in the new structure, we are even better positioned to serve the needs of our customers in the bicycle industry. Our goal is to establish ourselves as one of the top addresses for engineering and product development in this market.”

Taking part at the “Start-Up & Innovation Day” at EUROBIKE 22

Radiate Engineering & Design will be on the stage at the “Start-Up & Innovation Day” on July 14th 2022 at EUROBIKE in Frankfurt! The event provides a platform for the bicycle industry, investors, developers, designers and engineers for inspiration, knowledge exchange and networking. We will join the podium discussion as part of the “HERE TO LEARN” program, which is about learning about new business models, new products and target groups, and the latest in the future mobility market.

We’re happy to be part of the event – looking forward already!

If you’re also in Frankfurt at the EUROBIKE and want to meet >> just contact us!

Radiate expands capabilities in AI and ML Engineering

With the advent of AI and ML, product development and with it the possibilities for engineering and design are about to change forever. Unlike traditional data-gathering technologies, AI and ML have the ability to learn from data and transform this knowledge into design guidelines for faster and better product development.

Radiate Engineering & Design is employing several facets of AI and ML to develop and launch new products and tools as well as to improve the existing ones. Together with our Lead AI Engineer, Massimo G. Brivio, we will be working on optimization and AI-enabled surrogate modeling to boost our capacity to deliver innovative and cutting-edge products.

The next step is to develop an AI-guided Design & Optimization Tool both for internal use and customer projects.
More to come, soon!

Welcome to the Team, Juan!

We are very happy that a new engineer has joined our team! Juan Ignacio Navarro Mañes joins us with immediate effect as a Mechanical Engineer with a special background in Bicycle Engineering.

Upon completion of a Bachelor and a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering in Spain, Juan moved to Germany where he did a second Master in product development at the RWTH. Thereafter he worked for a year in the electronics industry for an American company in the Netherlands. Finally, Juan worked at Thömus, a Swiss bicycle brand in Bern before joining RADIATE.

We’re glad to have him on board and wish him a successful start!

Teaming up with Mammut for a Circular Design Project

One of the biggest challenges today is using sustainable production processes integrated in a circular economy – because the world needs more circular economy friendly products. It is one of the challenges that also Radiate Engineering & Design, as a product innovation company, must meet.

We are therefore happy to announce that we are teaming up with Mammut Sports Group in order to explore the use of novel & sustainable materials for future product development. We are looking forward to the cooperation and to the joint development of a new product.

The partnership is fueled by the two partners, which complement each other well: Mammut Sports Group as an expert in the field of avalanche safety, mountaineering, climbing and outdoor equipment and Radiate Engineering & Design as an expert and innovator for novel materials and processes for highly stressed parts and components.

Following the steps of a simulation-driven product development approach we will test prototypes early in the process—in our lab but also in the field, as we strongly believe in the benefit of early testing paired with simulation-driven development.

More concrete information about the project will be published soon – so stay tuned.

Record: Mountain biker Nino Schurter celebrates 33rd World Cup victory

Hats off and congratulations to Nino Schurter, who celebrated his 33rd World Cup victory at the season opener in Petropolis, Brazil. He achieved the longed-for 33rd success in the World Cup and equals the record of Frenchman Julien Absalon. By the way, Nino Schurter was riding with the Silverton SL full carbon wheels, developed and engineered by Radiate Engineering & Design. The wheels are a key component adding to the overall package of a lightweight, fast and fun cross-country bike from our client, Scott Sports SA.
