Our client Revolt Zycling has just launched a website for their long-range E-Bike called OPIUM.

The speed-pedelec comes with cutting-edge technologies to give riders the longest range on the market – up to 340km with one battery charge are possible.

Thanks to the Simulation-Driven design and engineering by the Radiate team, the frame of the OPIUM is particularly light, integrates all functions perfectly and lasts a bike life.

Revolt Zycling will present the OPIUM at Eurobike 2022, the leading global trade fair for bike businesses.

Finally, a beautiful E-Bike with great range!

New Project for Tour de Suisse Rad AG

It may be early in 2022 but there’s already a first new project coming up. We are very happy to announce that Radiate Engineering & Design teams up with Tour de Suisse Rad AG for the development and assessment of a new frame geometry. Tour de Suisse is a Swiss bicycle manufacturer from Kreuzlingen and is well known for its “à la Carte” system which allows the customer to put together his or her individual bike from a range of colours and equipment.

Silverton SL Wheels win Olympic Gold in Tokyo

The British rider Tom Pidcock has been juggling three different cycling disciplines in his first season as a professional. After competing in cyclo-cross and on the road this season, the multi-discipline rider from Yorkshire has made Britain’s MTB history by winning Olympic gold today on the technical course of Izu. Earlier this year, it was reported that Pidcock was testing different wheel options from Syncros, DT Swiss, and Duke. Now in Tokyo, Pidcock raced on the Syncros Silverton SL carbon wheels, which might have made a difference in his ride for the win. The wheels were developed by Radiate Engineering & Design in cooperation with Scott Sports SA.

Congratulations from the Radiate Engineering & Design Team!

Design & Engineering students develop a modular bicycle trailer

When transferring a product idea into a feasible product, a wide variety of technical aspects must be taken into account. No one knows this better than Martin Schütz, engineer and lecturer at both ETH Zurich (Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering) and Zurich University of the Arts (Industrial Design). In his class about Design and Engineering, he gave his students an in-depth insight into the problems of the technical implementation of an idea up to a functioning product.

The task that the students gave themselves was to design a modular bicycle trailer. They wanted to develop an innovative idea and turn it into a functional prototype. The concept from the team around Felix Brunold, Dominic Büttiker, Yu Ting Chung and Thibaut Wenger was to develop a bicycle trailer that can be adapted and used for various applications and types of luggage and loads.

When the moment arrived to turn the students’ product idea into reality, Radiate Engineering & Design came into play. During one day, the students showed up in the Radiate Prototyping Lab in order to finalize and produce a functional prototype, using flax materials and vacuum lamination methods.

The results – of which we are a bit proud of as well – can be seen in this image gallery:

The collaboration with MTB Cylcletech & Revolt Zycling continues

The Revolt Zycling AG was founded in 2020 and follows the goal to delight customers with high quality bikes. Their most well-known brand, MTB Cycletech, has been going its own way as an independent bicycle brand since 1984. Perfection, quality and timeless design are the guardrails, innovation and pioneering achievements the result of persistent work. This year, some very new models of the MTB Cylcetech brand will be launched. Radiate Engineering & Design is looking forward to support Revolt Zycling in the development and realization of the new models.

Tom Pidcock wins the Nove Mesto XCO World Cup on Silverton SL wheels

British rider Tom Pidcock of the Ineos Grenadier team has won the 2021 Nove Mesto XCO World Cup. Pidcock chose the Syncros Silverton SL wheels for his bike setup, developed by Radiate Engineering & Design. Since the Ineos Grenadier’s bike manufacturer (Pinarello) has no mountain bike models in its catalogue, the cyclist has practically been given total freedom to choose the material he wants from all the brands on the market. In a video (as shown above) that the team released in early March 2021 he was testing all kinds of equipment – and for his final setup, he decided to use Silverton SL wheels.

We are very happy that Silverton SL finally scored the first victory in a World Cup!

Syncros Silverton SL: new wheels for the Scott-SRAM racing team

Big news: For 2021 and beyond the Scott-SRAM MTB racing team will ride Syncros Silverton SL wheels. Launched in 2019, the Silverton SL is a miracle of modern bike engineering.

Next to it’s extremely light weight, the wheelset offers performance benefits in terms of acceleration, cornering and tracking. Together with Scott Sports SA, Radiate Engineering & Design developed the Silverton SL from scratch, demonstrating, how technical limits can be shifted if innovative engineering ideas come into play.

For the development process, a specially equipped Scott Spark RC with modified axles and strain gauges was used during the test rides of the wheels. A central unit mounted on the bike which was connected to a laptop in the backpack of the rider collected valuable data of each test ride. The data was analyzed by engineering specialists at Radiate in order to improve the characteristics of the Silverton SL wheels.

As Nino Schurter from the Scott-SRAM MTB racing team puts it:

“The Syncros Silverton SL wheel is super light but the benefits don’t just stop here. The construction removes weight from the rim allowing for super fast acceleration. It’s also stiff allowing for great power transfer, tracking and in particular cornering. Perfect for World Cup racing.”

The team of Nino Schurter, Kate Courtney, Lars Forster and Andri Frischknecht will all ride the Silverton SL one piece carbon wheels from now on at the World Cup.

You can find out more about Silverton SL wheels including some behind the scenes of the development process in the video.

Eurobike Engineering Highlights

During our visit to the Eurobike 2019 fair, we found an interesting display of innovative engineering ideas. Especially two projects caught our eye, that are both daring and innovative at the same time.

New drivetrain from CeramicSpeed
It’s quite unusual to see a complete redesign of a drivetrain. Usually, innovation is approached within the standard chain and derailleur configuration that we all know. However, CeramicSpeed is attempting to break the mould with its new concept drivetrain called “Driven“. It uses a dual Pinion configuration with a fixed front Pinion and a split rear Pinion that handles the gear shifts. The Pinions are made up of a ring of CeramicSpeed bearings which form the method of engagement. The gear change is wireless with the shifting mechanism, actuator and rechargeable battery housed inside the hollow carbon shaft. By splitting the rear Pinion each half can move independently with gear changes using what CeramicSpeed describes as a “step and follow pattern”. They have been working with the University of Colorado’s Mechanical Engineering Department on the project and it looks both stunning and daring! For a closer look on how it works, check out their video.

Titomic: Additive-manufactured carbon and titanium
The company uses a technology called “Titomic Kinetic Fusion” for the application of cold-gas dynamic spraying of titanium alloy particles onto a scaffold to produce a load-bearing structure. As with the tube-and-lug frame they exhibited at Eurobike, this can be used to create small components, which are then fused via carbon tubing. Titomic also showed a 3D printed carbon frame they developed together with their partner Varuu cycles. This clearly shows the potential of additive manufacturing in the cycling industry.

New Project for MTB Cycletech

Since 1984, MTB Cycletech has been an independent bicycle manufacturer, following its own path. The brand creates quality and originality through courage, independence and lateral thinking. As a niche bicycle manufacturer, MTB Cycletech succeeds in bringing products to the market that are decisive and by which they can be measured.

We are looking forward to supporting MTB Cycletech in a new project in the field of FEM analysis and to continue our successful cooperation.
