“Design Perspectives” at the Zurich University of the Arts

“Design Perspectives” is a series of events at the Zurich University of the Arts in which invited guests give students and interested parties an insight into design practice and highlight focal points of related disciplines that influence industrial design.

The next edition on the topic of “Design Perspectives: Bike Design or the bicycle as a fusion of the aspects design-manufacturing-function”, Jonas Schmid from Radiate Engineering & Design will participate, among others.

What is the significance of bike design? In which contexts does it play a role? Is the bicycle a technology driver and where will the journey go? Nicola Stäubli, Jonas Schmid and Martin Schütz will provide answers during a panel discussion. They will give an insight into their work as bike designers and shed light on the connection between design, production and function with the associated approaches and challenges.

  • Nicola Stäubli has been riding bikes since 1984 and designing them since 2019. He is a qualified architect, designer, passionate biker and ex-bike courier. He led product development and innovation at FREITAG and is inventor of the compact cargo bike MONoPOLE.
  • Jonas Schmid has been riding bikes since 1993 and designing them since 2010. He works in mechanical engineering at ETH and as a product developer and carbon and simulation expert. He is also a persistent biker and founder of Radiate Engineering & Design.
  • Martin Schütz has been riding bicycles since 1972 and designing them since 1993. He is a bicycle enthusiast, design engineer with a background in mechanical engineering and lecturer at ETH and ZHdK.

The event will take place on Tuesday, 21 March 2023 at 17:00 in room 5.T07 in the Toni Areal.
Admission is free of charge.
